Joliet’s walk-off win ends DuPage’s win streak

By: Adam Johnson
At the halfway point of the season, the Joliet Admirals have hands down been the one team in the league that the Hounds cannot figure out. Every game between the top two teams in the MCL has been a battle from start to finish with Tuesday’s contest being no different. Unfortunately, the favor was held in the Admrial’s hands once again as they won in walk-off fashion, plating one run in the bottom of the ninth to take the ballgame by a score of 4-3.

Most of the offensive damage was done by the top four hitters in the Hounds order, which started off with Dane Toppel in the leadoff spot. Dane went one for five at the dish with a base knock. Joe Engel was next up in the two hole where he was the only Hound to record a multi-hit game after going two for four with a single and a triple.

Javier Martinez was the only Hound to record an official RBI, which came on a single. He also reached base an additional time after being struck by a pitch. Cleanup duties were handed over to Brandon Post who reached base twice in his four trips to the plate on a walk and a base hit.

The only other DuPage hit came from Billy Hayes who smacked a double in the gap. Tyler Tesmond and Mike Roberson each reached base once in their four trips after working walks.

Chase Lowman gave the Hounds another excellent start out on the hill. Unfortunately, his efforts only earned him a no decision, but he still proves to be one of the most elite pitchers in the MCL as he went six innings in which he surrendered three runs on five hits while striking out four. Despite a solid performance out of the pen, Austin Lukaschewski was handed the loss after he gave up one run on one hit in the ninth. The winning hit however was hit off John Dreveny who came on in the final frame to try and nix the damage, but to no avail.

Kenny King was the hero for the Admirals after hitting the game winning base hit. He also reached base a second time earlier in the game on a single as well. Brendan Brundage went one for four with a two-RBI single. Jordan Miller and Brendan Krob both reached base on extra-base hits where Miller’s came in the form of a double while Krob slugged a triple. Jermaine Terry and Andrew Stone both reached once on a single.

The Admirals elected to go with a committee of pitchers for Tuesday’s contest with Chuck Newman getting the nod to start. Newman went the first three innings in which he gave up no runs on one hit while striking out one. Tom Cheshareck threw the fourth where he gave up one run on one hit while striking out one. His downfall was that he walked three batters in the inning. Next up was Adam Zuk who threw two innings of one run ball where he gave up two hits. Finally, Tyler Swiggart picked up the win after going the final three innings in which he gave up just one run on two hits while striking out three.

The Hounds next ballgame is Wednesday, July 6th at 5:00pm at the Lemont High School Sports Complex against the Bloomington Bobcats. We look forward to seeing you all there!
