Hounds Take First Loss

After a 13 inning victory last night over the Rockford Foresters, the DuPage Hounds (4-0) take on the Northwest Indiana Oilmen (2-1) in game two of three in this weekend’s home stand.

Brett Maus (1-0, 0.00 ERA) took the bump for the second time this season for the Hounds. He got his first win of the season against the Foresters on opening day where he pitched 8 innings and struck out 14 batters.

On the hill for the Oilmen was Andy Wellwerts who was making his first start of the year.

Maus got himself into trouble early, loading the bases in the top of the 2nd. The Hounds escaped with minimal damage only conceding one run in the inning.

But the Oilmen’s offense was relentless scoring three more runs in the next inning making it 4-0.

Wellwerts had the Hounds’ number giving up one hit in the 1st inning to Joey White (.429 AVG). The next Hounds’ hit did not come till the 5th inning when Brian Rodemoyer (.417 AVG) doubled to left. There would not be another Hounds’ hit until the 9th inning.

Maus gave way to right hander Kyle Dermondy (1-0, 0.00 ERA) in the 6th inning with the score still 4-0.

All was quiet on the offensive side moving into the 7th inning, as Dermondy exited after one scoreless inning and was replaced by Ryan Hinchley (0-0, 0.00).

Wellwerts pitched 6 shutout innings of 2 hit baseball, striking out five and walking one. James Hinkleman (0-1, 9.00 ERA) came in for relief.

The Hounds offense couldn’t find traction against Hinkleman who pitched a perfect frame then gave way to Danny Pobereyko.

The Hounds threatened in the bottom on the 8th, but still had no answer for Oilmen pitching.

A wild pitch from Hinchley gave the Oilmen some more insurance in the top of the 9th to make the score 5-0.

Things got interesting in the bottom of the 9th as the Hounds’ bats came alive. After being two hit the whole night, DuPage scored 3 runs on three hits making the score 5-3.

The Oilmen brought in their closer Matt Pobereyko (0-0, 4.50 ERA). After giving up another run making the score 5-4, he got the final out to hand the Hounds their first loss of the season.

The winning pitcher was Wellwerts, the loss was handed to Maus, and the save went to M. Pobereyko.

The Hounds (4-1) take on the Oilmen (3-1) again tomorrow at 6 p.m. here at the Benedictine University Sports Complex.
