Three’s Company: Hounds’ Triples Halt Skid

By:

DuPage stormed back with three runs in the 6th inning to validate reliever Nick Martin’s five shutout innings in the Hounds’ 5-3 win over the Zephyrs in Sugar Grove. The win snaps the Powder Blues’ two-game losing streak.

Down 3-1 in the top of the 6th, Brian Lees led off with a triple. Two batters later, he came in on a triple from Richie Gorski. Gorski scored on Drew Sterioti’s RBI groundout to tie it 3-3. Adam Wilson followed with a two-out single and scored the go-ahead run on Emerson Misch’s three-bagger.

DuPage County (17-5) totaled four triples in the game. The first came in the top of the 4th when Frankie Perrone plated Lees to make it 3-1.

Chicago struck first off Hounds starter Ryan Hinchley. Nick Erikson was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the 3rd, and Bobby Smith and Greg Sidor followed with walks. Brent Minta singled in the first run, and a second came home on Jake Jouris’s double play. Drew Bailey’s single made it 3-0 for the home team.

Hinchley departed after four innings of work, handing the ball to a man who tossed six shutout innings against the Zephyrs one week ago. Nick Martin kept Chicago guessing all the way to the end, allowing just three singles in his five innings, walking one, hitting three, and striking out two to earn the W.

The Hounds benefited from great glove play in the first two innings. Drew Sterioti, starting at second base, turned a double play in the bottom of the 1st to erase a Zephyr rally. Frankie Perrone, meanwhile, showed off his arm in the 2nd by throwing out Andy Jaskolsky at first base from right field.

The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the 9th inning when Drew LaComb scored on a dropped popup from second baseman Gino Cabral.

The Hounds head back to Flossmoor tomorrow night for a second meeting in five days with the Southland Vikings. The Reds produced the fireworks on Saturday afternoon in a 19-8 trouncing of first-place DuPage County. The rematch begins at 7:10 and will be live-tweeted @thedupagehounds.
