Trent Carrier tossed five scoreless innings in his first start of the season and the Hounds rode a steady diet of offense and pitching to an 8-0 win over the Zephyrs, completing a doubleheader sweep.
Carrier picked up a win in by far his longest outing of the season, blanking the visitors over five innings of two-run ball, walking one and striking out five over 61 pitches.
DuPage County (20-8) got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Stewart Nelson and Frankie Perrone hit back-to-back singles, and Connor Kopach dropped a bloop down the right field line that turned into a two-run triple. LaComb’s RBI single made it 3-0.
Kopach found right field again with a run-scoring dying quail in the 5th. The All-Star shortstop finished the day 3-5 with a triple, stolen base, two runs, and 3 RBIs.
Chicago (4-19) managed just three hits on the evening, only picking up extra bases on John Brodner’s two-out double in the top of the 9th. Tyler Hasper worked the 6th inning on the mound, allowing two baserunners but striking out two and keeping the Zephyrs off the board. Adam Dressler followed up with three scoreless innings of his own in his first appearance since June 8 against Southland.
In the first game of the season where Coach Sean Osborne forwent the designated hitter, it was Dressler’s 8th-inning at bat that created the most buzz. In his first time at the plate since high school, Dressler fought off 10 Kyle Cliff pitches before grounding the eleventh to shortstop. He was greeted by his teammates as he returned to the dugout and received nice ovation from the Dog Pound crowd.
The Hounds added some insurance in the 7th when LaComb singled home Nelson and Kopach. Brian Lees’s RBI single two batters later plated LaComb to make it 7-0.
Mike Roberson, who hit the first Hounds home run at home in the morning, launched a pinch-hit double in the bottom of the 8th to bring in Drew Sterioti.
The Hounds improve to 13-0 on the season against Joliet and Chicago and become the first MCL team in 2014 to reach 20 wins. DuPage will face the Northwest Indiana Oilmen in a road-and-home matchup this weekend. Both games will be broadcast on dupagehounds.com.
