Hounds' Bark as Good as Bite

By:

The DuPage Hounds are 8-3 in the Midwest Colligate League. Tonight they took on the Rockford Foresters (1-7).  This is the third time they have met this summer with DuPage winning both prior meetings. This is game two of six home games this week.

The lefty Brendan Delany (1-0, 0.84 ERA) took the hill to try and make it three in a row for the dogs.  Opposing Delany was Kyle Klosak (0-3, 5.00 ERA). Klosak faced the Hounds on opening night and in relief on June 7. He has given up only three runs and five hits in six innings of work to the Hounds.

On a beautiful summer night, both offenses seemed to be spectators as Klosak and Delany mowed down each other’s line ups. Over five and half innings, there was only three combined hits.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Hounds took the lead with a RBI single by Mitch Gasbarro; only the third hit of the night for the Hounds. That was all in the inning, but the damage was done as the Hounds got on the board 1-0. That would prove to be enough.

In the top of the 6th, Harry Vickers doubled to left to be the first real threat for the Foresters. Delany calmly induced a grounder to shortstop to end the threat.

Pitching was the name of the game tonight as both pitchers had their ‘A’ game.

In the bottom of the 7th, Klosak exited after a lead off infield single. Sean Hudson entered for the first time this season for the Foresters. Josh Keim doubled with two outs to right field, then advanced on a wild pitch to third. Hudson pitched out of the inning and left the score at 1-0.

Klosak pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up one run on three hits. He walked three and struck out three as well.

Delany on the other hand was feeling no pain as he came out to start the 8th inning. He walked the leadoff hitter who moved to second on a sac bunt. After a fly out, he walk another runner which made Coach Osborn call to the pen. Josh Howard (1-0, 0.00 ERA) came on for the four out close.
It took Howard four pitches to get out of the inning with a strikeout.

The top of the 9th went 1-2-3. Howard got his first save of the year.

The win went to Delany, loss to Klosak and the save to Howard.

The Hounds have a double header tomorrow, taking on the Foresters at 11 a.m. and the NW Indiana Oilmen at 7 p.m.

The final: 1-0 Hounds

Hounds move to 9-3. Foresters to 1-8.
