Concklin's Dominance on the Mound Leads Hounds to Their Third Straight Victory

By: Adam Johnson

The Hounds came into tonight’s game against the Lexington Snipes 2-0, looking to win their third straight game of the young season. Over the last two games, the Hounds’ red-hot bats have allowed them to cruise to easy victories. However, tonight was a different story as their pitching carried them all the way to the finish line as the team picked up the well-deserved W.

Tom Concklin took the bump for the first time this season, putting up a performance that will be extremely difficult for any Hounds’ pitcher to top. The power pitching righty flat out dominated over eight innings, not allowing his first base runner until the fifth inning and not giving up a hit until the middle of the eighth.  Over those eight innings, Concklin only allowed one run on two hits and struck out a Hounds’ season high ten batters.

Tonight’s dominate pitching performance ended with Nick McKinney, who came in to pitch the ninth in a non-save situation, finishing off the Snipes in a quick ten pitches, striking out one batter in the process.

Joe Duncan led off the game with a walk and then proceeded to steal second. Richie Gorski then stepped to the plate with two outs and drove a line drive to center field, plating Duncan and giving the Hounds’ an early 1-0 lead.

The Hounds did not score again until the sixth inning when Trent Carrier drove a single to left, allowing Duncan to score and Ryan Fitzgerald to advance to third. Gorski came up again and he too drove a liner to left, allowing two more runs to score, pushing the Hound lead to four.

Trent Carrier scored the Hounds’ fifth and final run in the eighth when he advanced from third to home when the Snipes opted to throw down to second on a Gorski stolen base attempt.

For Lexington, Neal Tyrell, Deion Thompson and Cully Day each had one hit. Jack Rettig and Kolton Vermillion each threw an inning in relief, giving up no runs.

The Hounds’ next game is Friday, June 5th at 5:00 PM (CT) at the Lemont High School Sports Complex against tonight’s opponent, the Lexington Snipes (0-2).
