Hounds sweep Thursday doubleheader with Bloomington

By: Adam Johnson
Game 1 vs. Bloomington

After last week’s tough stretch that saw the Hounds drop four of their six contests, the boys from DuPage were ready for a fresh start heading into their fifth week of the season. In fact, the Hounds could not have turned it around in any better fashion as their bats exploded for a season’s best 19-team hits which ultimately carried DuPage to a 22-5, game on victory.

Reigning MCL Player of the Week, Dane Toppel was back in the leadoff spot for game one where he reached base twice in his five trips on a walk and base hit. He also drove in one of the Hounds 22. The red-hot Ryan Krob followed in the order where he went two for six with two singles and four RBIs.

Joe Engel assumed the third spot in the batting order for the first time this season and he did not disappoint. Joe went an impressive four for five at the dish with four singles and three runs batted in. He also reached a fifth time on a base on balls. Javier Martinez was on cleanup duty once again where he went four for six with three singles and a double. He also drove in a game’s best five runs.

Tyler Tesmond kept up his RBI streak after going on for three with a single with a one-run sacrifice fly. Mike Roberson had another impressive game at the plate as he went three for five with a two singles and a double. He also reached base a fourth time via the walk and drove in four runs on the day.

The other Roberson brother, Joey continues to see his average climb after going two for four with two singles. He also drew two walks on the day. Finally, Eric Giltz rounded out the end of the Hounds batting card where he reached base four times in six attempts on a single, a double and two walks. He also drove in a run.

Newcomer Basil Arain was handed the ball to start game one. Still working out the early season kinks, Arain lasted just two innings in which he gave up four runs on five hits while striking out three. Hounds ace, Chase Lowman came on to save the day as he locked down the next four innings, in which he allowed one run (none earned) on three hits while striking out three. Cole Berry took the ball for the final frame where he threw a perfect one-two-three inning.

Game 2 vs. Bloomington

After a game one blowout, game two brought us one-run barnburner. After jumping out two a 5-0 after five, the Hounds saw the Bobcats stormed back in the bottom half of the fifth to plate four runs, cutting the once lofty deficit to just one. From there on out the Hounds locked it in and fought off any chance of a late-inning Bloomington comeback, taking game two by a score of 5-4.

Ryan Krob continued his flat out dominance at the dish, going three for four with three singles and a RBI. He also picked up two stolen bases on the day. Brandon Post returned to the lineup after getting game one off and he reached base twice in his four trips on a walk and single.

The Roberson brothers continue to be a deadly force in the middle of the DuPage lineup as Mike went one for three with a single as well as a walk and Joey went a whopping three for four with a single, two doubles and three RBIs. Finally, Zach Girard jumped into the game two action by reaching base twice on a walk and base knock.

Thomas Goodyear continues on his impressive stretch as he picked up his third win of the season after going the first four innings in which he gave up four runs on four hits while striking out eight. Tony Iero also continues an impressive run as he secured his second save of the season after locking down the final three frames, allowing just one hit while striking out three.

The Hounds next ballgame will be Friday, June 24th at 7:20pm against the NWI Oilmen at Oil City Stadium. The Hounds currently lead the season series at two games to one.
